How to Make Time for Self-Care During the Back-to-School Rush

As the back-to-school season kicks into high gear, the hustle and bustle can easily become overwhelming. Between managing schedules, helping with homework, and juggling the endless to-do lists, it’s common for self-care to slip through the cracks. Right now, this may seem impossible but the truth is, planting seeds of self-love in this most fertile ground will yield transformative power in your life. Prioritizing self-care isn't a luxury—it's essential for our productivity and overall well-being.

The Importance of Self-Care

Research has shown that moms who prioritize their rest, effectively manage stress, and find ways to connect to joy are better equipped to handle the demands of daily life. These moms are more patient, present, and productive, which ultimately benefits not only themselves but also their families.

A study by the American Psychological Association found that moms who regularly practice self-care report higher levels of life satisfaction and lower levels of stress and burnout. They are better at managing their emotions and more resilient in the face of challenges. Simply put, taking care of ourselves helps us take better care of our families.

Simple and Renewing Self-Care Rituals

You might be thinking, "But how do I find the time?" Trust me, I get it. I feel out-numbered and pulled in opposing directions often, but self-care doesn’t have to be time-consuming. Here are some simple rituals you can incorporate into your busy day:

In the Car During Pick Up and Drop Off

Breathwork: Use the time while waiting in the car to practice deep breathing. Inhale deeply through your nose, hold for a few seconds, and exhale slowly through your mouth. This can help calm your mind, reduce stress and settle your nervous system.

Gratitude Moments:I do this with my daughters every morning. We take a few moments to activate our energy by rubbing our hands together and placing them on our heart. We then share 1 thing we are grateful for that makes our heart warm or glow even more. It’s a quick and efficient way to shift your mindset and boost your mood.

Releasing Tension During the Morning Routine

Mindful movements: While waiting for the coffee to brew or the kids to get ready, do some gentle stretches and bring your attention fully to your body. With each micromovement feel your muscles and sense where your body is in space. Reach for the sky, touch your toes, or do some neck rolls. This helps release physical tension and prepares you for the day ahead.

Positive Affirmations: Look in the mirror and repeat positive affirmations. Remind yourself of your strengths and capabilities. It’s a small act that can set a positive tone for your day.

Gaining Patience During Bedtime Routines

Mindful Moments: Bedtime can be the most peaceful and the absolute worst part of your day as a parent. I know. I have gone through 4 iterations of toddler mayhem during bathtime. As you help your kids wind down, take a few deep breaths and be fully present. Notice the little things—the sound of their laughter, the feel of their tiny hands. Mindfulness can help increase patience and reduce stress even for a few moments. It may delay and create a little space before you completely blow a gasket in frustration.

Nighttime Tea Ritual: After the kids are in bed, brew yourself a calming tea. Sip it slowly and use this time to unwind and reflect on the day. My older girls have seen me do this ritual for myself and now at 12 and 14 have a night-time tea ritual of their own where they get together and talk about their day with each other.

Taking a few moments each day for self-care saves me everyday and I know it can help make a world of difference. These small practices add up, helping you feel more balanced, energized, and ready to tackle whatever comes your way.
