Embracing Self-Compassion: How to Release Perfectionism and Find Contentment in 3 Steps

Updated: Apr 23

In the whirlwind of your hectic life, it's all too easy to become entangled in a web of obligations, commitments, and endless to-do lists. As a holistic healer, a spouse and a mom of 4, I understand the weight you carry, the balls you juggle, and the moments when being kind to yourself feels like an insurmountable task. But amidst the chaos, there exists a path to contentment—a journey that begins with extending grace and compassion towards yourself. Here, I offer three self-care tips to guide you from frantic to contentment:

1. Release the Weight of Overcommitment: As you watch balls drop amidst your busy schedule, it's natural to feel a pang of guilt or frustration. But what if, instead of chastising yourself for dropping the ball, you viewed it as an opportunity for release? Take a moment to acknowledge the balls you've dropped and the commitments you've struggled to uphold. Recognize that some of these commitments may have stemmed from a lack of boundaries or an overestimation of your capacity. Allow yourself to grieve for

the perceived failures, but also embrace any sense of relief or "fuck it" energy that accompanies the guilt. Without judgment, breathe and allow yourself to fully experience the moment as it flows through you.

2. Extend Compassion to Your Inner Child: Visualize your inner child as the one attempting to juggle far more than they are capable of. Imagine the immense compassion and grace they need in that moment. Now, extend that same energy to yourself. Recognize that you are doing the best you can with the resources and capacity you have. If a ball drops, instead of berating yourself, ask your inner child if the load is too heavy and how you can lighten it. Embrace the vulnerability of acknowledging your limitations and prioritize self-compassion in every moment.

3. Ground Yourself and Release the Doer:

After the emotional wave of guilt or anger

subsides, what remains is truth—the truth that you are more than what you do, produce, or create. Take a moment to ground yourself in the present moment, basking in the restorative peace of pure loving awareness. Allow yourself to release the weight of expectation and perfectionism, surrendering to the inherent worthiness that resides within you. In this space of stillness and acceptance, you will begin to feel lighter, more grounded, and deeply content.
