Thanksgiving will soon be upon us and thankfulness and gratitude are concepts we hear about often—especially when life feels bountiful or a particular season invites us to reflect. But to access the transformative, magnetic power of gratitude, we must go beyond simple thankfulness. The true power of gratitude lies in cultivating reverence: an appreciation so deep that it touches the very core of our being and connects us to the natural flow of life and the universal intelligence that animates us.
Reverence isn’t about expressing thanks for a specific event or blessing. It’s about honoring the flow of life, recognizing the intelligent design that holds everything together, and trusting in that deep wisdom, especially when things don’t go as planned. Every cell in our body is held together by a force far more powerful than gravity. There is a nuclear strength within you—a force and intelligence that’s been there since birth, maintaining the structure of each cell and giving you life. This same intelligence holds the whole of nature in balance. When we let go of our need to “hold it all together,” we align with this greater intelligence, allowing us to simply "be" and return to a state of reverence.
Cultivating Reverence in Everyday Life
Gratitude rooted in reverence becomes a transformative tool for connecting with the wisdom of life. Here are some ways to cultivate this deeper sense of appreciation:
1. Practice Mindful Observation
Take a few minutes each day to observe something in nature or within yourself—a tree, the sound of your breath, or the feel of the earth beneath your feet. Let yourself marvel at the complexity and perfection of the smallest details. This practice helps you tune in to the intelligence that permeates everything, opening your heart to gratitude.
2. Embrace Your Body’s Wisdom
Our bodies carry an incredible amount of wisdom, often guiding us back to balance when we surrender to it. If you find yourself holding tension, take a deep breath and let go of the need to “hold it all together.” Trust that the intelligence within you knows what it’s doing, and allow that inner wisdom to guide you.
3. Allow Life to Flow
Reverence for the flow of life means trusting that everything that happens is a tool for our learning, even the difficult moments. When we can appreciate challenges as opportunities for growth, gratitude flows naturally. Each experience teaches us something, even if we don’t see it immediately. Embracing life with this mindset allows us to soften and surrender.
4. Honor Your Strength and Nature’s Power
Just as nature sustains itself, so do you. Reflect on your own strength, which has carried you through life’s ups and downs, and the steady rhythms of nature. Both serve as reminders that life is designed to support us. Honor this strength by creating moments to acknowledge your resilience and allow yourself to flow with life’s patterns.
5. Release Unrealistic Expectations
As women and mothers, we often feel pressure to meet unrealistic standards. When we choose to focus on reverence instead of perfection, we free ourselves from expectations that don’t serve us. By surrendering to the flow of life and aligning with gratitude, we give ourselves permission to release what isn’t ours to hold.
Take a moment each day to deepen your awareness of the strength within you and the natural intelligence that surrounds you. Feel into the comfort of surrender, allowing the flow of life to reveal itself. By trusting in the wisdom of this connection, you’ll begin to see the patterns in your life more clearly. You’ll also find yourself empowered to consciously choose how to engage with life, rather than getting caught up in unrealistic expectations.
