An essential element of self-love and self-care involves how you perceive your body, your physical abode. As women and mothers, our bodies often undergo changes as part of life's journey. However, there are times when our mental and emotional attitudes do not align, leading to feelings of fragmentation and dissatisfaction with our current life stage. Embracing body positivity and cultivating love, acceptance, and gratitude for our present bodies is a self-care voyage that we are privileged to embark on.

The Foundation of Body Positivity
There have been huge strides in the body positivity movement. However sometimes it may feel like although it sounds good to love yourself no matter what, attaining that mindset may feel far off. Feeling good about yourself and your body starts with understanding that your perceptions are largely conditioned and often occur subconsciously. It's important to acknowledge that any guilt or negative feelings you have about your body are not inherently your fault but rather a product of societal conditioning. Over the years, I have heard countless patients apologize for their twisting toes and scaly skin. I would always wonder who told you these things were bad. The good news is that you have the power to alter these perceptions and feelings, one moment at a time. Here are three steps to begin shifting how you feel about your body towards a more positive vibe.
Step 1: Put It in Context
Recognize that feelings are transient and can be changed. Nothing is fixed. Beliefs, too, can be shifted, and you hold the power to do so. When you understand that your self-esteem and body image are malleable, you begin to reclaim your power. By placing your feelings about your body in the broader context of societal influences and transient emotions, you can start to detach from negative self-perceptions and cultivate a more positive self-view. Remember, every moment is an opportunity to redefine your relationship with your body.
Step 2: Appreciate Your Body's Functions
This is my take on body neutrality vs body positivity. Body neutrality can be a springboard for bringing more positive vibrations into your life. Take a moment to become aware of the incredible things your body does for you every day and No, you will not need a deep bio lesson. Your body enables you to travel, watch your favorite shows, enjoy your favorite meals, and have restful sleep. By acknowledging and appreciating the complex and miraculous processes that your body performs, you can develop a non-judgmental attitude towards your body and its functions. This awareness can help you shift your focus from how your body looks to what it can do, fostering a deeper sense of gratitude and respect for your body.

Step 3: Anchor Yourself to Your Body as a Place of Safety and Security
Anchoring yourself to your body as a place of safety and security can be challenging, especially for those who have been marginalized or systemically told they are not beautiful or acceptable due to racism or other forms of discrimination. Start by bringing your awareness to areas of tension in your body—places where you might be holding stress or energy. Send gratitude to these muscles and body parts for protecting you and trying to keep you safe. Recognize that your body is doing its best to handle and process your subconscious fears, threats, worries, and insecurities. By sending love and appreciation to the so-called "broken" parts of your body, you elevate your mood and increase your body positivity. This, in turn, affects how you show up and move in the world.
By following these steps, you can begin to shift your perspective and cultivate a more positive relationship with your body. Remember, feeling good about yourself is a journey, and each moment offers a new opportunity to enhance your body positivity and overall well-being.
