In a fast-paced world, it’s easy to get swept up in responsibilities, overwhelm, and even self-doubt. When life becomes chaotic, we can lose sight of our true selves and our inner strength. But with some intentional practices, it’s possible to not only maintain a sense of connection to yourself but also to feel more empowered in the face of life’s challenges.
Here are three steps to help you reconnect with your inner strength and stay grounded in your true self.
1. Build Awareness of Self through Internal Family Systems (IFS)
The first step in staying connected to your inner strength is understanding and building awareness of your Self. According to Internal Family Systems (IFS), a psychological framework, we are made up of different “parts” or sub-personalities, each with its own emotions, memories, and beliefs. When these parts feel threatened, overwhelmed, or fearful, we can lose sight of our core Self.

The Self-energy, however, is the part of you that is whole, wise, resilient, and strong. It is your true essence that remains steady no matter what storms may come. When you build awareness of your Self, you can learn to let the parts of you that are afraid or stressed come to this calm and grounded Self-energy. By tapping into this state of wholeness, you find clarity, strength, and peace, no matter the external circumstances.
Practice:The next time you feel overwhelmed, try to pause and breathe deeply. Acknowledge the part of you that feels threatened or stressed and gently guide it to the Self-energy, which holds strength, resilience, and wisdom. Visualize this interaction as a calming embrace of your inner turmoil.
2. Visit Your Strength Reel
We’ve all had moments in life when we felt strong, capable, and resilient. Maybe it was a time you overcame a challenge, achieved a goal, or simply felt confident in your abilities. These are what I call your “strength reel”—a collection of experiences that reflect your personal power.
Taking time to visit your strength reel is a powerful way to reconnect with your inner strength. It allows you to remind yourself that you have been resilient before, and you can tap into that same power again. Reflecting on these experiences can shift your mindset from one of fear or self-doubt to one of confidence and strength.
Practice: Take a few moments to journal about a time when you felt powerful and strong. What were you doing? How did you feel? Write down your reflections and revisit this journal when you need a reminder of your inner resilience. This practice will help you cultivate a habit of self-recognition and remind you of your inner strength whenever you need it most.

3. Use Somatic Exercises to Communicate Strength
Sometimes, when we feel unsure or indecisive, we need more than mental exercises to regain our strength. This is where somatic practices come in—embodying strength physically to help shift how we feel emotionally. One such exercise is the Superman pose.
When you stand in a power pose—arms on your hips, legs slightly wider than hip-width apart—you send signals to your brain that you are confident and strong. This somatic exercise is scientifically shown to impact how we feel, invoking feelings of strength, composure, and empowerment by connecting with your body’s nervous system.
Practice: The next time you are feeling uncertain, stand tall in the Superman pose for a few minutes. Breathe deeply as you hold the posture and notice the shift in your body and mind. Your posture can communicate to your brain that you are powerful and capable, invoking a sense of calm and certainty.
By building self-awareness, reflecting on your past strengths, and using your body to communicate power, you can cultivate a deeper connection to your inner strength. These practices will help you stay grounded, resilient, and confident in the face of life’s challenges.
